This reminded me of a particular wake-up call I had a few years ago about the various things we take for granted in so many discussions. I’m a long-time participant in a cooking thread on another board. One day, a legit chef asked me about making gumbo. So I decided to post a recipe in the thread for my most commonly made version for him (and others) to enjoy. I typed it up, copied & pasted it into a response window and was about to hit “POST”, when I noticed I had skipped a small step. I fixed it, but then noticed another omission. After correcting that, I paused, suddenly realizing that what I was about to post would be easy enough for HIM to follow, but “the others” might not be as familiar with certain terms or techniques. So I filled in those gaps. I was about to post it again, when I remembered he was in Norway, and might have problems getting certain ingredients.* So I added substitutes. But in doing so, I remembered past instances where I also had to substitute ingredients because of allergies, medical or religious dietary restrictions, and so forth. So I made note of THOSE ingredient swaps. I eventually added a tutorial on how to make a gumbo roux, and why you’d use different kinds. The post I thought I could knock out in an hour ultimately took me THREE DAYS of revisions & editing before I decided it was complete as I could make it. * Even though it was a catalyst for refining & improving my post, I had worried needlessly. His kitchen was in a resort upscale enough that he could import whatever ingredients he damn well pleased, and his personal income was likewise sufficient to do so for his personal kitchen!😂
