When it comes to people's tastes, I always reflect back on something from my past. Some time ago, a younger family member was expressing his love of a certain comedian to me (let's say his name rhymed with Main Rook). This is way back when Main Rook was really popular. Anyway, I was kind of ... sarcastic about Main Rook and said some unkind things about the comedian and how the YFM would "grow out of it." Entirely justified in my mind, but still. And then YFM argued back with me about how awesome Main Rook was, etc. The next day, having had some time to realize what had transpired, I went to YFM and told YFM how proud I was of YFM. I knew it must have been difficult to stand up for what YFM liked - especially to me (I can be cutting... shocking, I know), and that YFM should never be ashamed to like something, or to feel enthusiasm for something. I was wrong for being a dick, and I was happy that YFM was sharing his enthusiasm. Main Rook might not be for me, but that didn't mean it wasn't for YFM. The YFM eventually did grow out of the Main Rook phase on his own but that was part of his growing to learn and love different types and styles of comedy. To learn what he loved and liked. And I'd like to think that I helped YFM do that- but do you know how? Not by the one time I insulted Main Rook (and apologized afterwards, deservedly). But by sharing other things with YFM that I loved and that broadened YFM's comedic horizons. Share what you love, and why you love it. That's always the best way.
