Pinning people to the ground?

When this came up in the game, I ruled that a creature could use one of his latter grapples checks and the Drop to The Floor Free Action to pull the creature it is grappling to the ground with an opposed Strength check (modified by creature size, etc.). It is basically a Trip action with no Attack of Opportunity while grappling, but since the opponent is already grappled, he cannot use Dexterity to oppose the check, just Strength.

The creature is not pinned to the ground per se (unless possibly pinned within the grapple), but it is prone if it fails the Strength check. So is the creature that pulled it to the ground.

Interestingly in our game, the PC Gnome Sorcerer was able to prevent the larger and stronger NPC Hobgoblin from pulling him to the ground for 3 or 4 rounds in a row. ;)

I always got hte idea that you need to pin the opponent against SOMETHING.....and if you have nothing but the ground, what else are you going to pin the opponent against? It seems kind of weird there are no mechanics to "bring someone to the ground" in a grapple, even though that is the entire aim of a grapple.....

Ever hear of a full Nelson? That's one example of pinning that does no require a backing. The Rules of the Game had some more grappling options, if you're interested.
