BTW, this discussion really warrants a pirate smiley. Or for that matter, a ninja one. Maybe they're not available, having killed each other.

If there is a pirate core class, I propose we make a 20th level NPC and have it fight a 20th level ninja core class from Dragon.

I'm totally rooting foir the pirate.

Me too! After the ninja tuckered himself out fighting a knight in full plate (see Dragon 323), the Pirate would bushwhack the little bugger and steal his funny boots.

Green Ronin has an excellent PrC, the Freeport Pirate.... last time I checked, you could get the info for it for free at their web site. I do think that a pirate base class would be cool, though.

What is this thing that people have for more and more core classes? You don't need a new class to play a pirate. Be a fighter/rogue with ranks in Use Rope, no ranks in Swim (very few sailors in the age of sail could swim), and proficency in belaying pin, and that's all you need.

Dragon #310 has an article on variant fighter classes (similar to the kind of thing found in Unearthed Arcana), including the corsair. It has a slightly-altered bonus feat list and a few special abilities related to shipboard fighting, like Climb-Fighting (no longer flat-footed while climbing) and Ocean Tangle (use a Swim check in place of a grapple check when wrestling in water deep enough to swim in).
