Pirate fantasy

I have questions to all pirate fans out there. What are the most basic elements found in fantasy pirate stories? If there would be one or two magical element in this, what would it be? Im trying to create a "pirate world" that is something that is totally different, that have not been seen or done before yet be very cool to play characters from.

Tribal (shaman) magic based on native island cultures.
Even pirates? I trying to see which magical element, theme or school that everyone, pirates and islanders would know?

I'd say Vodou rather than tribal shaman. Both are forms of animism but Voodoo is linked more to spirit possession.

One story is that Blackbeard was a practicioner of Voodoo and that the burning fuses he knotted into his beard was to invoke Baron Samedi.

In a Pirate Fantasy you also need Zombies, Blackbeard, Cursed Treasure, Hexes and the Evil Eye, The Fountain of Youth, Wild Spirits and a huge mute Bokor as your navigator

Well, considering that pirates come from all walks of life, not necessarily Westerners, a islander shaman might join a pirate crew. They may be relied on when there is no star to navigate or no wind to sail with or no fish to catch. Of course, if they fail, they may the first to die if the superstitious crew believe they bring bad luck with them.
