Piratecat's DMing tips?

Dark Jezter

First Post
Quick question, guys. A long time ago, a thread on this site had Piratecat's tips for DMing, and they were some of the best I'd ever seen. I'm planning on running a FR campaign sometime in the near future, and I unfortunately can't remember which thread these were in. Could somebody please post them here?

Oh. Hrmmm. Huh.

I have no idea. There have been a couple of these threads filled with LOTS of peoples' ideas, all of them good.

I'll try some searches late tonight, when traffic slows down. If anyone else knows, though, please post!

One observation I've made of Piratecats DMing - he likes the PC's more than his eeeeevil NPCs which he creates.

Don't get me wrong, the NPC's and opponents are eeeeevil and designed to gut the PC's... but when they come up with a cool way of offing the bad guys, or just plain out-think him, Piratecat runs with it.

This is the way it looks to me in practice, and I think it really enhances the fun of the game.

Cheers

That's one of the keys to DM'ing that many never learn: In the end, your incredibly cool, evil, powerful villain exists for one purpose: To make the PC's feel awesome when they finally defeat him. A DM must be willing to let go of a cool NPC when the PC's earn the victory.

True, but it's a bummer to spend hours painting the really cool miniature and have the players think of an off-the-wall idea that kills the critter within the first two minutes of battle. :D

Seriously though, I had a heated debate last year with another DM who thought I was 'too easy' on my players and accused me of 'pulling punches' just because there wasn't at least one casualty every game with a random trap or mega monster that came out of nowhere. (He's also had several groups fold on him.)

Piratcat's DM Tips

7. Coke. Never serve Mountain Dew at a game. Coke is the only beverage.

Don't you mean "All is Coke. There Are No Other Forms of Refreshment. Drink Coke or Die Screaming"? :D
But seriously, folks, Piratecat does have a lot of good tips and advice, and it would be nice to see them compiled. Just my .02

Demiurge out.
