In a recent thread, prompted by the release of Pirates of the Caribbean, several folks posted that pirates have been too highly stereotyped to offer any new or creative rpg ideas.
I don't agree, but here's a thought for those who do: Throw out the 17th-century trappings and port your piracy tales to a modern setting.
Unfortunately for maritime interests, piracy is alive and well today in Southeast Asia, but it does create a treasure trove of d20modern plot opportunities. Whether your PCs are pirates or good guys fighting pirates, there are endless adventures to be had in the South China Sea.
