PIXIE: Great Race... or The Greatest Race?

Well, perhaps not for EVERY class combination...

but the Pixie is, even at +4 LA, an amazing race.

Which base class do you feel would the pixie get the most millage out of with no PrCs or level dips?

Level buyoff is acceptable.

Pixie is a great race.

Don't know if it's the BEST build, but Pixie Warlock is pretty nifty. Especially since one does not need to invest in 2 invocations for flight and invisibility.

Dragonborn Pixie Dragonfire adept(remember all the pixie magical goodness is in the one racial hit die), polymorph into a dragon and then add breath effects. Add a familiar and have some poor sucker get hammered with your breath weapon while he is dancing to his death.

I am of the opinion that monsters belong in the Monster Manual and on the other side of the DM screen. The occasional campaign of monster PCs is fine and it is nice that the rules are internally consistent enough to allow for such things with ease. But just because the pixie has a level adjustment listed does not mean it is appropriate for all campaigns. I can see it being far more appropriate as a cohort or something of that nature. But that does not mean it should be seriously considered as a player character option in most cases.

Well you're a lamer.

airwalkrr Monsters as PCs is a great campaign and opens up a lot of options for them. And your players may not choose to be monsters. After all they are giving up quite a few levels of a class to be a monster but in exchange getting some cool new special abilities and usually a nice boost to stats to enhance the class they want to play.

Any type of ranged attacker is great for a pixie as it gets a +8 to dex and can craft special arrows. Rogue would be good and then combine it with scout. But any Dex based class is where this one would excel.

Also any caster would be good. After all it gets a +6 to INT, and Cha and a +4 to Wis. You could even dip a level or two into paladin for the save bonus to Cha and the extra HP and BAB.

I wouldn't go Monk. It sounds cool but due to its size and the -4 to STR racial adjustment you're not going to be doing much damage even with flurry. Starting damage of 1d4 and caps out at 2d8 and then you might be taking a penalty due to STR.

I respect your opinion, but mine is different. Savage Species was one of my favorite books of the 3E era. I love the idea that there are NO limitations on the imagination and creativity of DM and players.

I DO agree 100% that a given creature is inappropriate for a particular campaign, because a campaign is fundamentally limited to a subset of all of the potential game rules. But the idea of placing arbitrary limits on the game - particularly for character concepts - just doesn't suit me.

That said, I've not had a chance to play one but I have statted up both pixie warlock and pixie sorcerer characters. I'd love to play one in a game, through the +4 LA is a bit tough to handle at low levels.

#Some caster type with either INT or CHA as the key ability.

Having LA is a biiiiiig disadvantage for a caster-type. Avoid damaging spells which inflicts level dX damages (say, Fireball). Also avoid spells which allows SR. Spells which makes an enemy cry with a single failed saving throw (like Glitterdust) will be your friend.

#Scout, or Scout/Ranger

Skirmish could be your friend as you can inflict good amount of damage from distance. Don't forget to take Improved Skirmish feat in Complete Scoundrel. Having Evasion is nice, too, as you are likely to have very low HP total.

Using a crossbow is a good idea as you are likely to have low Str. Check Crossbow Sniper feat in PHB2. Or, you may throw some splash weapons such as Alchemist's Fire.

Also check Swift Hunter feat in Complete Scoundrel. Scout/Ranger with appropriate favored enemy can use Skirmish against something otherwise immune to it.

A rogue could be an alternative but I do not recommend. In a campaign in which LA 4+ races can be played, you must expect that enemies often have some countermeasures against invisibility. Also, the above-mentioned Scout/Rogue build is much better when facing something immune to critical hit.
