Planar Problem

Leffa

First Post
Hi.

Tonight we had a great session, where we finally caught up with and defeated a recurring villain. Great fun was had by all, but in the middle of the fight, one of the players was the unfortunate subject of a plane shift which brought him to the elemental plane of air.

The character asked the GM if he should just make a new character, but the GM only smiled, and said it was totally up to whether or not the other players came to his aid. My question is, what can we do? And how much would we end up paying for it?

Similar thing happened to my character not long ago - got hit by prismatic spray that sent me to another plane. We weighed the options and found that while Gating me back was a possibility, it would be cheaper to pay a wizard to scry me, then planeshift twice - once to go to the plane I was on, and again to get back.

What you do really depends on what your party is like and what level you all are. If you're wizard knows some dimensional spells of some sort it would be pretty easy to get there, but you may all want boots of permanent fly or somesuch item. Though the elemental plane of air has subjective gravity, it's very hard to do anything unless you can actually fly. If you have ever wandered accross permanent portals (that can probably open/close with a specific command word) those are a good bet for travelling to that plane. Otherwise I think you guys would have to shell out a fair wad of cash to pay for a spell from a wizard/get scrolls. Still, it depends.

oh no...AIR!

Wow, did he get lucky! Air would be my pick for random plane shift, for sure.

From my past experiences 'losing' party members...GET HIM BACK! Either dead or alive, but get him back, or he'll come back on his own and you don't want that nasty little surprise hanging over your head. Especially with planar travel, he could be gone for 400 years angrily wandering the planes, then show up in your next gaming session.
"...Bert! You're back! You disappeared in the last fight and we..."
"YOU SHALL PAY FOR YOUR TREACHERY, OLD FRIEND...KNOW MY PAIN!!!"

Elemental plane of air, for the character, is a lot of falling, possibly some wind-burn and chafing. The only real danger is striking something else that is falling, inclimate weather, or being caught by a big-bad that lives there.

Start by getting info on him, is he alive, where is he, how is he, etc, etc. Then try to find a caster that will fetch him. My wiz/planeshifter would love to go, shouldn't take but a couple of minutes, tops, and Air is so...exhilarating.

As far as 'summoning' him, good luck with that. I'd say bounty hunter or fetch/retrieve is the only way to go. If you can afford a rez, place a bounty on his head and require a body part to claim the reward, include the price of the rez in the reward if returned alive.

p.s. Get him back.

"Why, hello, Yan . . . Er, nice place you have here . . ."

If I were the DM, I wouldn't be able to resist the temptation of running that PC in a solo session.

Thanks for all the tips. We're pretty sure he's a alive, because when the next session starts he's only been there a few seconds/minute. The problem is that we need to act fast before he starves or thirst to death. He had the sudden realization that he left most of his rations and water outside the dungeon on his mule. So he only has two days left of food and water.

I think we'll probably look into plane shift and boots of flying. Our party consist of level 9-12. With the lowest being level 9 (200 xp or so from level). Most being level 10. And one each on level 11 and 12 (both of them the only ones who hasn't died yet). We currently have no wizard as he was killed by a dragon a few sessions ago, and the player decided to make a new character. But the level 12 character is a cleric and the closest thing our group has to a rules lawyer, so he can maybe do some of his brianesque magic.

Hi!

Your Cleric is able to cast Plane Shift twice a day. Combined with Scry its pretty easy to get him back. You don`t even have to buy Winged Boots, a Fly Potion would do the trick as well. I'd buy them nevertheless just in case... :D
