[Planescape] Essential products?

Probably my most favorite PS book is "On Hallowed Ground", mostly because it has so much use outside of PS. It has like every god listed, many of them in detail, but in the back is this most awesome appendix which lists every god by sphere of influence. Need a god of numbers? Done. Need a god of trickery? It's got 'em. Very handy, IMHO.

you're absolutely right, actually. i was rather excited the day that book came out, even though it featured very little tony D art. i remember meeting him at my first gencon and asking him if he was going to do something like the D&DG book for PS and he said wanted to so badly that he had already come up with a number of sketches. guess he was mostly off the PS line by the time they got around to it... :(

IMO, here's what's *absolutely essential*:

- Planescape Campaign Setting box
- Planes of Chaos box
- Planes of Law box
- Planes of Conflict box (to this day, one of the only D&D books *ever* that actually made me say "oh my god!" when reading it...)

Almost essential:

- In the Cage: A Guide to Sigil (if you plan to use the city of Sigil)
- The Factol's Manifesto (if you plan to use the Factions)
- Guide to the Ethereal Plane
- Guide to the Astral Plane
- The Inner Planes

Don't need at all, but cool:

- Hellbound box
- Faces of Evil: The Fiends

I cannot agree that getting the MCs will be useful. While the Habitat/Society and Ecology entries are *very* much missed in 3e, the MCs just aren't worth it unless you can find them for quite cheap.

Planes of Conflict was my favorite boxed set (apart from the core books), and the best adventure for Planescape was undoubtedly Dead Gods, which I'm running right now.

As for conversion, it depends on your dedication to 3E. I personally twist and mangle rules all the time for the sake of the story, so it doesn't bother me at all that planescape hasn't been converted to the new standards. In fact it gives PS a nice warm 'classic' glow that I find sadly missing in many of the slick sourcebooks of today. I thought Manual of the Planes 3E was horrible, really. All the rules and none of the fantasy fun.

Many of the planescape adventures take place in Sigil, so the Factol's Manifesto and the Guide to Sigil are pretty important. The later books, such as Infinite Staircase and Faction War, were good reads but had no DiTerlizzi artwork, and they suffered for it.

Thanks for all the info, folks.

I went back to said bookstore and managed to pick up Uncaged: Faces of Sigil and Faction War for $12 each. They had the Player's Guide to the Outlands (the one w/ the CD) for $25, but I passed.

Damn! Which bookstore is it that still carries Planescape stuff? I'm lucky if my local used bookstores even carry Sci-fi/Fantasy novels, let alone gaming books.

It's a used bookstore near me (the Bookzeller, Naperville, IL). They don't carry a lot of gaming stuff; this was just lucky.

Is this available as an ESD anywhere? I can't seem to find it, either on svgames or rpgnow.

Hrm, how close is Naperville to Chicago? I'm there for Christmas and maybe I'll check it out if it's not too far.

Does anyone know what the ESD's fgor the PS stuff are like?
The ESD's are pretty good. I've got a handfull of them. For five bucks I'd say they're worth it.
