Planescape/Spelljammer knowledge needed ...

Hi

I got my copy of Lords of Madness yesterday, and so far (at p.31) I think it's a good read, and I've gotten several ideas for future adventures and campaigns. One idea, however, might be usable in the near future, but I'm not certain whether it is possible, and thus I could use some input from those of you who have played/DM'ed in Spelljammer and/or Planescape campaigns.

I'm DM'ing a Forgotten Realms campaign, and at the moment several plot threads are open to my players. One of them involves sending the players to Sigil in order to track down a sage. My initial idea was to use a portal. But after reading a section of LoM (Origins of the Aberrations - Out of Space; p.6), I thought it might be cool to do something different.

The Idea(tm): Would it be possible to use a spelljamming ship to get from Faerûn to Sigil? As far as I understand the section in LoM it is possible to reach other planets on the Material Plane (e.g. going from Faerûn to Greyhawk), but what about the Outer Planes, The Outlands, etc.

Any hints would be much appreciated. Thanks in advance!

No.

But I have some excellent news: You're the DM!!!

Some Options

1) Sigil and the other planes become places, akin to really big planets.

2) There is a gate to Sigil, it's just in outer space (such as outer space exists in Spelljammer). Make it a vortex or some other kind of black hole thingie. This works because coming back through the other direction without a spelljammnig ship would be very deadly, and gates are supposed to be hazerdous

3) A more traditional gate to Sigil exists, but it's on some other planet. Or it's on that wacky moon Faerun has.

Happy gaming!

By the book, you can't get to Sigil from Faerûn through wildspace or the phlogiston. However, in In The Cage, they mention someone who has been ordered by his employer to locate some fresh ink, and goes to a company called S&J Enterprises and orders "a squid". A couple of days later, they have brought in a Squidship, and the poor guy is in debt to the tune of a hundred thousand gp. So, presumably, there is at least one gate leading to Sigil that's large enough to fit a moderately-sized spelljamming vessel through.

*nodding* I always figured that there was a gate large enough to fit that spelljammer, or they brought it into the city piece by piece and then put it back together.

I did something similar in my own campaign/storyhour in which the PCs managed to get their hands on a spelljammer sans spelljamming helm and took it bit by bit into Sigil, reassembled it, and set it up on their inn so it appeared to have fallen out of the sky and crashed into the side of the building. It was a nifty gimmick for the place. :)

To echo what others have said...other planes can't be reached by physical travel. Even though a spelljammer moving at spelljamming speed is travelling one hundred million miles per day, it won't ever reach Sigil. You need to move through a portal for that.

The only way to get into Sigil is through its own portals...

If there's a portal big enough for a spelljamming ship to fit through, then you can take a spelljamming ship to Sigil through that portal...

In the Cage: A Guide to Sigil has a story about how someone was asked to order some squid, he thought he was paying for really expensive squid until he discovered he really ordered a Squid-Ship.

Wasn't there a plot seed in one of the Cage books where the PCs come into possession of a spelljammer parked at sigil.

(Though, as I pointed out elsewhere, one of the things that I really dug about LoM is that is sort of kicks Spelljammer take on cosmology to the curb, so that may be something to work around.)

Technically no, but IF you can get said ship into the Astral Plane...

Think hard enough and travel long enough, you'll find your portal.

I've read about ships that can travel to the Astral Plane and back again (probably OGL, memory fails me at the moment). No reason one of these couldn't be fitted with a Spelljamming Helm.

You can't use a Spelljammer to go to Sigil by the books, as others have said. I did see the stats, however, in some 2E book somewhere, for a "Planejammer" , a Spelljammer with the capacity to also Planeshift. Even that can't go to Sigil without a portal, but at least it could go to the Outlands and other fun Planescape places. I love Planescape and Spelljammer (that's why I'm running a NeoSpelljamming campaign on the boards soon, Destiny's Tears) :)
