Planescape: Torment on Wikipedia main page

To celebrate the 10 year anniversary of the Planescape: Torment video game, I'm giving away 3 free copies on the 12th (well 2 on the 12th, 1 on the 13th for latecomers). It's just to raise a little visibility for Platter's Planescape pages, a fan site made by Platter years ago, and then rescued by me when he abandoned it. So if you've never played the game and would like to see about getting a free copy, the giveaway is here:

Planescape: Torment Fix Pack

However, the giveaway form will only be there through the 13th, Pacific Time.

It's a good game. I really hope that people who would be interested in playing a very talky, almost "adventure game" RPG will stop by. I'd hate to give away the copies to people who have no liking for the game.

To me Planescape: Torment was so good it defined the setting for me, more so than even the pen and paper books and boxed sets. The Baldur's Gate series did not bring Faerun to life like Torment brought Planescape.

Never played it but always heard how awesome it was. I'm actually listening to the soundtrack this morning, i found it on the net a few years back. It's fantastic, one of the better game soundtracks i've ever heard.

BOZ, I must say you are doing a very good job making WP entries on D&D related products and subjects relevant. Too many "fans" just put in things like "in-universe" entries, and ignore elements that the outsiders would like to be interested in. (Like, how well did it sell, what cultural impact it has, etc.).

About the one criticism of the article is that I don't see any reference to overall sales figures. Despite the critical acclaim, how well did the product actually do in the marketplace?

The developers have later stated that the product actually made a profit. Many people think "didn't do well" means it was a loss or financial disaster. In reality, it was just a slow burn that never blew up the way Baldur's Gate did.

I think this is partly why some Planescape fans are a bit puzzled by the steadfast abandonment of Planescape -- not just PS:T, but in general. It actually made money. It just appears that it didn't make the copyright holders rich enough.

aboyd, since you seem to have quite the technical knowledge regarding PS:T, may I ask your help regarding an issue I had last time I tried to play it?
My PC is by no means a cutting edge sample of technology, but it is quite above what was the norm back in 1999 :p
I have an integrated nVidia graphics chipset (gforce 6150), and last time I tried to run PS:T everything went more or less ok, until a battle started and some spells were cast. The spells' animations were all wonky (black blocks of nothingness falling from the sky instead of fireballs) and then the game crashed.

Do you know if there's some way to play the game with a sort-of-modern PC?

------------

Ok, enough derailing. Back to our regular schedule :p
