Planning Domain & Extend Spell

Andion Isurand

First Post
If someone took the Extend Spell feat but later gained a level in cleric and wanted another feat instead of gaining Extend Spell a second time from the Planning Domain...

...would you allow them to simply choose any another feat so long as they qualified for it?

...or would you let them instead be provided the Extend Spell feat from the Planning Domain as normal, but then let them replace the first Extend Spell feat for another feat they would have qualified for at that level... and as long as no prerequisites were broken?

IMC they generally regain the feat if it can be taken multiple times, otherwise taking the next one in the feat-chain. if none exist then taking any other feat they would otherwise qualify for in its place. however i also consider a case-by-case adhoc house-rule keeping the theme if it makes sense.

ie: normally Extend Spell can only be taken once to double the affected spell's duration for +1 effective spell slot, so your described character would get Persistent Spell as its the next in the feat-chain. However given the Planning Domain's theme, might consider allowing THAT character's Extend Spell to x4 the affected duration instead of the normal x2 for the +1 effect spell level slot per Divine-Override.

I'd just let the player pick a new feat with the general feat slot he spent on Extend Spell. Note it'd be at the character level he first picked it up. So if he took Extend Spell at level 1 and later got the Planning Domain, he could pick any other feat that he was qualified for at 1st level.

If going using the feat-chain method... then Domination Domain would grant Greater Spell Focus (Enchantment) if Spell Focus (Enchantment) were previously taken.

...and of course the feat-chain method for the Elf Domain could go on for a bit.

Wonder what Rune Domain would give if you already had Scribe Scroll...

See, that's why I prefer to just give the old feat back rather than try to figure out a chain. Also, it's entirely possibly the player wants nothing to do with the next thing in the chain. Plenty of people who take Dodge want nothing to do with Mobility, for example...

For Rune Domain, I guess let the cleric pick another item creation feat. If you wanted to be a RBDM about it, say he gets Skill Focus (Decipher Script) instead. :D

I was referring to the RAW required prerequisites by feat-chain, not inventing something new so let me try wording it another way:

if something provides a feat you already have (which cant be selected multiple times) then select another feat you qualify for ... with a preference for one the provided feat is the prerequisite for to maintain the ability's theme.

Yeah, that's what I figured, although scribe scroll isn't really used as a specific feat prerequiste that I'm aware of, hence Magic Artisan which is like a Spell Focus or Weapon Focus equivalent for an Item Creation feat.
