Players rolling all the dice variant from UA - Anyone used it?

Oh I see, yes it is probably just a perception of how the method works. The players don't get any information. They simply roll a d20, add their AC mod to it, then tell the DM a grand total. After hearing this number, the DM can inform them if the monster has successfully hit or not. The DM keeps everything secret, including the DC. Repeat for each attack. No other information is passed. See post #20 for a slightly longer description.

Yup. And I had read it in UA a dozen times but somehow had assumed the information was shared with the players, for whatever reason. Again, my apologies for derailing the discussion, if I did. To be honest, the only way I could see this NOT slowing down combat would be if the information WERE shared. Maybe that's why I was erroneously thinking in those terms.

I use it for the purpose of speeding up combat, delegation of tasks. For example, I can use a hand to scribble more notes/results while they drop the dice. You'd have to see it all in action to believe it I guess. One part I agree can sometimes hit a snag is, like you said, when a player at the table is the type who takes forever to physically complete the roll. You know, the person who *jiggles* the dice in their hands for a while, blows on the dice, etc. And then after all that, they proceed to roll the die straight across the table and off the other side. Or when somebody shakes the dice in their palm and one die squeeks loose and goes flying up over their shoulder. But I've had it happen to me while DMing too, so I can't complain too much. :D
