Playing it neutral in the FR

Mr Fidgit said:
well...as a character with an ultimate agenda, i'd be perfectly agreeable to just about anything the other party members wanted to do ("what?! an evil temple?! we will go and vanquish them!") - this way, when the time comes to put his plan into action, there's no way the PCs could possibly refuse

(and the entire time, your PC can be studying the other characters to figure out how best to approach the party about getting his 'ultimate goal' done, even to the point of lying to make the task seem more just to the good PCs in the group)

Not a bad tack at all ... but wouldn't manipulation of others to attain one's own goal be straying now towards neutral evil. ?

Play him just the way you described.

He wants to do a 'good thing' (free the slaves), but it isn't because of any intrinsic value of life or freedom. It is because he knows the people he wants to free, has a personal relationship with them.

The other slaves are on their own. You would be willing to go along with the good characters plans if by working with them you have a better chance of success in your own objective. You would probably make some suggestions that the other characters deem inappropriate, but you would not be looking to debase or destroy others like an evil character would.

You are not motivated by what preserves life in general, there are certain lives you care about and anyone else is on their own. That doesn't mean you couldn't be convinced to help someone, just that you don't go volunteering for that sort of duty.

One interesting method for playing this character is looking at if his/her alignment would change as they travel with a good group. Are the good characters setting an example that you would like to emulate, or do they seem like fools because of their stubborn refusal to use whatever means necessary. It doesn't have to be outright conflict, just a gradual shift in the character's point of view.

Good luck and have fun.

Thanks Bret,
Yeah, that's definitely in the general area I was moving towards, especially the possibility of an alignment change. It is possible.
Great suggestions all!
