playing Sounds/music during tabletop games

Looking for a reliable/robust program to do this. Any help is much appreciated. The program I've got is called SoundFX, and it kind of sucks (crashes often, doesn't work the way I'd like, etc).

My DM got an IPOD and just put the various sounds/music he wanted on the IPOD and then hooked it up to a sound system. It works pretty well and when he gets the sounds off on the sly, it's very effective, he's had us jump a couple times.

This site's not great, but it's one of the only ones I've found where you're not required to sign up, avoid pop-ups, or find nothing but a series of dead-end links.
