at the time I was thinking this is about adjusting CR / a single encounter., did not think that would extend to changing the number of encounters per day, guess we will see

No particular reason to suspect thst it will, based on the Class designs. The overall balancing framework is the same, but the guidelines for building encounters definitely can use an update.

other things like smite. I am not seeing an indication for # of encounters, but I would not mind that. I would not expect some kind of admission of guilt / a mistake even if they did though

Neither would I. Doesn't mean they didn't make one.
