Playtest Guide Release Frequency

There's no set frequency - we have a long time and no rush! My current task is generating art notes right now, which is a surprisingly enormous task! I tentatively plan the next document to be in a couple of weeks or so.

Have you already added more Traditions (or Careers) to the system that weren't in the released Playbooks? If so could we get a list of names? I'm looking at writing some more but don't want to reinvent the wheel.

Ahh, I was just getting excited for the next version from the various comments you've made regarding the next one.

No; I'm not focusing on modular stuff right now. Traditions/careers/races etc. are all very easy to add, so they'll tend to be left till a bit later (yeah, I know they're the exciting part!) Most of the work right now is in the core (in other threads I've mentioned adjustments to the advancement system, revised difficulty benchmarks, fleshing out the combat trick system with new categories of tricks, updated starship construction system - and added electronic warfare/CUP Cycles), the O.L.D. wilderness system, and so on). A lot of it you'll have seen littered about this forum, as I tend to talk about what I'm doing, but this will update and compile all that stuff.

I'm just finishing the art order, which is not fun. I love getting art; I hate writing it out! The start of it reads like this: "“Anime-like” or cartoony styles should be avoided. We're going for a more realistic approach here. Don't be afraid to sometimes depict non-“bodily perfect” characters – not everyone is a bodybuilder or a supermodel. Make it feel real. Avoid chainmail bikinis and deliberately skimpy armor unless there is a very good reason for it. Equal gender representation, it's very important to have diverse ethnicity, too (for humans - doesn't matter for blue aliens with knobbly heads!), and no explicitly exploitative poses or images. Avoid supersized “anime” swords. Where possible, figures should be depicted in context."

Whew. Spent today on the starship building stuff, integrating the CPU stuff and the basics of electronic warfare. Plus point defenses.

Also races/species are getting a bit of an upgrade.

The tier system is gone for PCs, BTW. Still there for monsters though.

Bunch more tricks (combat, starship, scientific).

And teetering on the cliff edge of a big change in how a dice pool is formed in terms of attributes and skills. Really unsure about it, but playtests exist for that reason, I guess!

Ok, you can't just bombs like this without a little more info! :)

OK. That sounds exciting. We are ramping up for a playtesting campaign. As I have been walking through character generation with the players and doing NPC generation; it struck me that the balance felt off. The dominance of attributes over skills in building dice pools feels very odd in N.E.W. I am super interested to see the next iteration.

I think you'd be surprised at how recent that change was, iteration-wise!
