Playtest Rogue adaptions

Lwaxy

Cute but dangerous
So,the rogue is described in a way that it has to be a thief. Which is probably just a playtest thing,as to many of us, not all rogues are thieves or assassins. Additionally, this is an all lawful party. The rogue that's about to be created is not a thief at all, but on the other end - a bounty hunter.

So we are going to replace Thieves' Cant with something similar enough - a bounty hunter language. Fits in our homebrew world and Freeport, too.

Any ideas for a replacement rogue scheme? Or just keep the thief one as it seems close enough to bounty hunter needs?

Perhaps a Bounty Hunter could sneak attack someone after studying them for a round and making a successful insight check. The later power could allow you to make an attack against someone you have studied as a reaction, but only if they attack you (they expose their weakness).

Actually, the Thieves' Cant is the only feature I see that 1) Applies to the class as a whole, and 2) References being a thief. Perhaps it's a feature that should be moved to Scheme, and either each scheme receives their own secret language, or only some share it. No reason the two options couldn't be mixed somehow.

Whether or not the rogue actually steals things shouldn't really affect whether or not they know the language associated with underworld dealings. Not everyone who works in less than strictly legal activities necessarily steals things.

True that. But I believe there are more than one hidden languages that can coexist. In any case, I can't wait to get started.

Why would a bounty hunter not know thieves' cant?

I was going to say, knowledge of thieves' cant is hugely useful for a bounty hunter - if you know the special words that thieves use to identify each other, then you can identify thieves just by listening to them. Which means you can now intimidate or bribe said thieves into telling where "Thog the Greataxe" is laying low.

Dammit, this thread is giving me an awesome idea for a character. A Matches Malone type who hangs out with criminals, but is secretly a lawman/vigilante. Waiting on that Charlatan scheme, WotC!

Yeah we stuck with keeping Thieves' Cant in the picture. First session was awsome fun, I hope to manage a write up today for the story hour forum.
