Playtest: The Invoker?

Pour

First Post
According to the Editorial Calendar for December, it lists Playtest: The Invoker for the 15th.

Forgive me if this has been covered already, but wasn't that "I" class supposed to be the Illusionist? Does anyone have any information on the Invoker? I'm going off the assumption this is a class. Any info is appreciated.

We know very little (it's divine, it's in the PHB2). And it seems we might not get our answers on the 15th, after all. :erm:

My guess is that the Illusionist, if there is a full class called the Illusionist, is Shadow powered and not appearing in the PHB II.

My hope, actually, is that Illusionist isn't a dedicated class. That instead its a flavor fo Shadowcaster or a general theme mixed throughout the entire Shadow power source.

Thanks for the info. You can always get snappy responses on these forums.

Divine Controller seems a good bet, which means a lot of controller love in the PHB 2.

Even the concept of invocation lends itself to the role of controller, invoking certain vices or virtues in enemies to control movement and the battlefield. Imagine an Invoker inspiring greed, envy, lust, wrath, sloth, gluttony or pride in one or a group of enemies. Or even a virtue like selflessness, inspiring the most injured enemy to sacrifice itself whenever another of its allies is attacked, sort of like it jumps in front of them in dramatic fashion.

No, but you're not the only one who had that impression. A couple of people on these boards claimed to "know" the illusionist was going to be arcane rather than shadow, based on the fact that wizards received a few illusion spells in a recent Dragon article. If true this would have made the illusionist a potential candidate for inclusion in the PH2.

So far we don't know a whole lot about the invoker, other than that he is a divine controller who uses flame strikes and the like to call down divine punishment on groups of enemies.

Most actual hints I've seen regarding the Illusionist seemed to point to Shadow as the power source, as well. The most common speculation I've seen (and thought as well) was that the I class would be the Inquisitor as a divine striker. There does seem to have been some name shuffling though, as we were told there would be a T class, and we got/will get the Avenger instead.

FYI, the editorial calendar changed this from "Playtest" to "Preview," so I'm expecting we'll see another 1-3 level build similar to the druid.

Good catch, Shroomy! I hadn't noticed that yet.

FWIW, if you check the note at the bottom of the article, it says that Preview articles are of completed game material. (Makes sense, I suppose.) I guess this means that rather than being asked for feedback about the Druid and Invoker, we're being shown what's going to be printed. Cool! (That's cool, right?)

Also, the AV2 article is still marked as "Playtest", while the Mercykiller article isn't marked as Preview or Playtest. (It initially said "Playtest".)
