Please confirm if characters must choose feat when they get it?

I would definitely complain to the dm if another player got my class feat option at the same time as my character, such as my 'craft wand' wizard at 5th level. While not unbalancing, I would view that as an attack my my characters exclusive rights to early acquisition based on me dedicating to the specific & single class.

I tend to allow banking of skillpoints & feats as an option to allow the game/story flow. For example if one were to keep a few skill points open, then if the opportunity arises during the game such as an NPC willing to teach a certain skill or give knowledge that the PC would like to learn than if the PC has time (it may vary depending on the how complicated/rare the skill may be) than the PC can learn it.

The Group was aware that they may end up having to travel to another plane to complete their quest. Ranin the Rogue had expressed a curiosity to learn more about these mysterious universes. Jarl the Wiz had some knowledge(Planes) that he learned while still in school. So while they were on the road to their destination, Jarl would tell Ranin of what he learned everynight as they settled down at camp.

With the flow, it's lets the PC get the feeling that he's able to learn things as he goes along the story, not just in stops and starts depending on when you gain your level. So when it comes to skills or feats that may require training, I find it doesn't make much sense that while exploring a crypt and gaining a level, the party wizard suddenly becomes aware on how to construct a magical staff. But perhaps after fighting their way back out, and having some R&R that wiz could learn that feat. It depends on the player really, some people do want to fill out their feats right away, some want to keep their Minds open to learn as they advance. (such as the fighter having a new feat, but the one he wants has a prereq for the next level)

I haven't seen anyone post any specific RAW that prohibits it. The arguments don't seem terribly plausible either, to be honest. Just some hand-waving about special "class feats" and something about "preserving the intergrity of the levelling system" whatever that means.

Lets see an actual rule.

Flip to the page in your PHB that details the process for going up a level.

You'll notice it says (to paraphrase), "Choose a feat."

Not, "Gain the option of choosing a feat now or at some point in the future."

Choose your feat before moving to the next step.

Huh. I've always played with "Feat Banking" enabled.

Chalk that up to another unwritten house rule, I guess.

I mean, if Bob The Builder wants to go without a feat through all of 3rd and 4th level so he can pick up Craft Wand with the party wizard ... sure. I figure not having a feat for 2 full levels while everybody else is enjoying theirs, and PAYING for the feat that wizard gets for FREE, will sort of salve the wizard's grumpy-pants.

Choosing a feat now and using it when you are able is how I have always played it.

1. Players spend some time choosing just the right feat. If they have to switch it slows the game process down.

2. So long as they pre-choose and cant teleport in an appropriate feat at the 11th hour I don't think its at all unbalancing. The character voluntarily opts to proceed without a feat until they qualify - they are less powerful and more directed. Considering that levels are an abstract subjective thing I don't think a feat should be stopped from arriving late.

3. Characters must finish their level with all their feats picked though. And they must have a certainty of qualifying for the feat in the future - or they will never get it and will get no other feat.

rules language based explanation for not banking skill points comes at PHBp62, second column, 2nd full paragraph, "Spend all your skill points. You can't save them to spend later."

Speaking of skills, does anyone use the rule for acquiring a brand new skill at a higher level found PHBp62? Skill popints to buy ranks is equal to Character Level +3 per rank of class skill? Pretty much prevents half the classes from taking new skills at 2nd level...

Having just looked it up, that section isn't saying "You must spend CL + 3 skill points for a rank in a new skill", but rather "The maximum number of ranks you can buy in your new skill is your character level + 3 for class skills or half that cross-class skills."

EDIT: "+ 1.5"? Where was my mind?

If you allow a character to save feats for later use, you should add the caveat that they would had to have qualified for it at the level the "feat slot" was awarded. Part of the game balance is the prerequisites for feats. If a feat says BAB +1 in the prerequisite line, it wasn't meant for a non-fighter BAB class to take before 3rd. Allowing them to take it at second means their third level feat is free for something else and you're basically ignoring the prerequisites entirely.

OHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH

I totally misunderstood that.....I read it as the the skill points equal to Level + 3 bought you one skill point!...so a second level character would need to spend 5 skill points to get one rank. Now I understand that is not the case and that a character could buy the skill ranks up to ...

my misunderstanding. I knew that seemed fishy
