Just because they are an enemy, doesn't mean you can wantonly kill them in all situations.  Killing an enemy who has been captured, imprisoned, and made helpless is generally considered uncivilized, even if they request it.  The PCs were probably being highly presumptive in taking on the roles of judge, jury, and executioner in this instance, and should have left the prisoner's final fate to the justice process of the town.</blockquote>
