Character Concept: Macabre (Vigilante)

Macabre is a shadowy figure who stalks those who seek to harm others - assasins, rapists, drugpushers, thugs. (She/He will however leave theives alone as long as they hurt noone)

Macabre is a master of stealth and escape, armed with iron claws crossbow and shuriken/throwing knives she/he uses ranged and stealth attacks to devestate enemies.

Macabre is a 'Deathbringer' visiting retribution on evildoers

Key Skills -Hide, Climb, Move Silently

NB I was considering starting as a dualclass ranger/cleric (of a death god) or possibly high dex fighter/cleric

also don't want Macabre to be 'Evil' perhaps LN? maybe NE

Sounds like a pretty cool concept. I'd like to see a fully fleshed-out background for this character, especially explaining why he does what he does and has that particular set of values. IMC my players use a set of worksheets that I designed to help flesh out a character's background, personality, appearance, mannerisms, etc. If you want to see them, you can contact me.

Assuming you are starting at first level I would go for either ranger or rogue. Ranger will help you out with the virtual Ambidexterity and Two-Weapon Fighting abilities. Ought to be useful for the iron claws (bladed gauntlets?) and shuriken or throwing knives. Also you get Track for free which seems essential to your character. As a rogue though, you get sneak attack and the hiding/sneaking skills that you want.

As for alignment, LN sounds good since you're kind of shadowy on the law/evil access but seem to have a well-developed personal code that you follow. I can't help you with the deity aspect because I don't play GH.

Stealing from people isn't harmfull? I take it you mean steal from the rich, since for them it'd be less of an impact.

As to alignment, Neutral Good would be my first pick based on the fact that you are taking the law into your own hands, yet you seem to be doing these things for 'the right reasons'.

As for class, I'd definately say you just described a "Good Thief", or Rogue in 3e terms. I'm not sure where you got the xxx/cleric idea from as you never once acutally mentioned spell-casting of any sort.

Go with Rogue, that back-stabbing is perfect for those ambushes and sneak attacks you say you're going to do (mabye that's where they got the name ;)). You don't sound much like you're going for the 'stand and trade blows' type of character anyhow, so strike quickly and from ambush with those poisoned blades of yours. If you're after Track and (more likely) Dual Wield for 'free' then be a Human and take one level of Ranger, putting the rest into Rogue and Sorcerer.

"Sorcerer?" I hear you ask? Well you didn't mention spell-slinging in your description, yet you mention a Ranger/Cleric character as a possible choice. I wouldn't suggest you take Cleric though. About the only God you'd be able to stay with (they know everything about you remember) would be a God of Murder, and those aren't usually very nice. Sorcerer would let you use that high CHA score you have, the one you wanted for those CHA-based skills like Sense Motive and Intimidate, for your questioning of the 'scum' you will be facing constantly. Besides, you're going to only 'dabble' in magic right? You won't feel the pinch of a Sor's limited spell selection too badly either. If you need items with spells you yourself don't have just go buy/steal/capture something from another Wizard/Sorcerer, you have 'access' to any Arcane Trigger device regardless of your Sorcerer levels.

If you just can't stand the restrictions in spell variety that a Sorcerer labors under then go with Wizard, that high INT you'll have will come in handy for truely impressive skill point totals, allowing you to keep a wide selection of skills capped at each level. Luggin around those spell books could be a pain, but the potential of a near-infinate spell selection is a big plus (at least to me).

If you go with either caster type I'd suggest you think seriously about taking the feat: Eschew Components. No point in advertising you're a wizard/sorcerer till it's too late.

Since he is the god of retribution, you could worship St. Cuthbert. You may not be an 'ideal' follower, but given the concept this god is likely to find your actions worthy.

You are going to want mostly Rogue levels, although a little bit of Ranger would probably help quite a bit.

There is a PrC in Song & Silence (Vigilante) that you might also want to look at. It uses Arcane spells and you would be expected to punish thieves as well. Still, it is something to look into.

If you've got Masters of the Wild, then I'd suggest you and your DM develop the Urban Ranger variant. For favored enemy, choose a thieves' guild or assassin's guild. I'd also second adding levels of Rogue and the Vigilante from Songs & Silence, or the Justicar from a recent issue of Dragon.

If you go with levels of cleric, and you have access to the Forgotten Realms campaign book, then talk your DM into letting you take the Retribution domain.

As for alignment, i'd go with Neutral. You're not quite good, but not evil either, and vigilantes aren't exactly law abiding.
