Energy Admixture [Metamagic]
REQ: Energy Substitution, one other metamagic feat, 5 ranks in Knowledge (arcana)
Choose one type of energy: acid, cold, electricity, fire or sonic. You can modify a spell with an energy designator to add an equal amount of the chosen type of energy. The altered spell works normally in all respects except the type of damage dealt. Thus, an acid fireball cast at 6th level deals 6d6 fire damage and 6d6 acid damage (roll each set of dice separately). The damage cap for a spell cast using this feat remains he same as the base spell but counts separately for each type of energy. So an acid fireball cast at 10th level or higher deals 10d6 fire damage and 10d6 acid damage. Even opposed types of energy, such as fire and cold, can be combined using this feat. An admixed spell uses up a spell slot four levels higher than the spell’s actual level. You can gain this feat multiple times, choosing a different type of Energy each time. You can use Energy Admixture to further alter a spell that has already been modified with Energy substitution. You can also use Energy Admixture to include your chosen energy type with a spell that already uses the same type, in effect doubling the damage dice. Tome and Blood, pg 39.

Almost useless. You can't even use the feat at all until you can cast 5th level spells, and then you only get to admix 1st level spells - at the expense of your valuable 5th level slots. I just don't see an admixed burning hands being the equivelent of a 5th level spell. Or an admixed flaming sphere being equivelent in power to a disintigrate.
The aforementioned admixed fireball would take up a 7th level slot!

yes, a 7th level spell that does 20d6 of damage. And take Energy Admix ANY orb for an 8th lvl spell, and do 30d6 (on a successful hit of course). and if you get a crit.....

I said Average. Its got good flavor, and can be very useful in some situations. But I see it as being mostly for higher level use.

I think it's an average feat

but what I would like to see is an admix you could use without upping the damage(and therefor not as high a slot level) :)

Some people have interpreted those spells as requiring a to-hit roll for each orb... But let's not get into that here.

I have a personal thing against metamagic that increases a spells level by more than 2. I just like the new, high level spells my character can cast so much better than being able to supe-up a lower level spell.

But that's just me.

Is there a feat that allows you to admix the energy of a spell without increasing the total potential damage done? Like, switch a 10th level fireball to 5d6 fire damage and 5d6 sonic damage? That would increase the level by only 1 or 2 and I'd like it better personally.

Above average; the EFFECTS are great, but IMO the cost is a tiny bit too steep (+3 levels would have seemed better IMO).

At Epic levels, it can truly shine. Energy Admixed / Intensified spells do absolutely huge damage (4x normal maximum for most). (+11 levels, less Improved Metamagics (up to the first three of them doubled in effect, since there're two metamagicks in use).

I gave it a '4'.

I was probably too generous because I like its style. It has a good thematic element (pun not intended), but powerwise it looks a little weak relative to the Empower or Maximize that accomplish similar ends.

Realistically, this feat has extremely limited value unless you can cast ~7th level spells. At that point on the power curve, I don't think that a 10d6 + 10d6 mixed Fireball is all that effective. Keep in mind that an Empowered Cone of Cold does roughly the same damage, and Empower is a more flexible feat.
