Wild Bill Hickok was a card player... he was killed playing poker in Aug 2nd, 1876. The legend goes he drew the dead man's hand of Aces and Eights before being shot down by Jack McCall; the younger brother of a man Bill had killed years before.

Who could forget "The Gambler" from the Kenny Rogers song... Not a real person per se, but an old wisened gambler burn out on his last legs.

I'll second Wild Bill Hickock, and add any of the Earp brothers.

Also, for a bit of comedy, Harry Flashman, british scoundrel and general all-around poltroon, who spent a fair amount of time in the old West.

Some kind of generic ideas, not specific people from history:

* A Rail Baron who wants to throw his money around and show off. Maybe opposing rail barons are in the game and use proxies to try to get the other guy out of the game. The players could get involved.

* A senator, governor or other high-level elected official that wants to play but keep his name out of the papers.

* Any number of swindlers drawn to the large amounts of cash.

* A former gambler-turned-preacher staking the last of his orphanage's money to get it out of debt. You can use this guy to gin up sympathy. Plus, there might be dozens of snot-nosed scamps running about making mischief.

* An East-coast high-society heiress and her friends dress as men to get into the game.

Why not include some modern day Poker players, too? You could throw in people like Chris Moneymaker, or that guy Gold (I can't remember his first name; just know he's an egotistical ass that relies too much on luck). You can have the pompous, energetic wild boy Daniel Negreneau in there, and of course the cowboy-hat wearing elder statesman of poker, Doyle Brunson.

Ancient history as my story is set in June 1882, and he has already been referenced in the campaign as being dead.

The Earp family has been prominently featured in all three of my modules in this campaign. Morgan and Warren are both dead and Wyatt has just been arrested for his vigilante rampage following the deaths of his brothers. I plan to have both Bat Masterson and Luke Short arrive in town in short order, having just heard about their friend Wyatt's arrest.

Another good suggestion.

Okay, here is the line-up as it now stands. Please feel free to offer another suggestion or two though, as we still have another 21 hours of character time to play out until the tournament starts so one or two of those listed might become 'unavailable' during that time.
