Polis: 3.5 Homebrew [Closed]

Crafting - just start in the hole; 3rd level, but with -# XP.
Cohort - the basic method I use is to let you "put out word" that you're searching for someone with ___ skills. You choose gender, race, class, perhaps a feat and skill or two, and I'll generate an NPC who fits the mark.
Mindbender - more or less the same. +1/2 levels spellcasting increases. Telepathy, bonus to Cha-based skills, spell-likes duplicating suggestion, infinite-duration charm, detect thoughts, domination.
DMG upkeep costs are in use for the most part, although there will be opportunities for players to pay for extra-good hostel rooms for the night, extravagent meals, etc (for sheer roleplaying effect).
Pearl o' Power: A pearl can be used by anyone to override the general recharge time (including letting you cast quickened spells in the same round you use it), or can be used by non-spontaneous casters to override a specific recharge time.
Spellbooks: There are discount copying services, but these are usually functions of a mage guild, requiring a hefty membership fee. However, bootleg spellbooks and primers are common enough that all wizards get an extra two free spells added to their spellbook each level.

OOC: major form of transportation is permanent teleportation circles for mass/long-distance movement. For on-foot travel, construct creatures or rarely living animals, are used. An Effigy Light Horse [Construct from Complete Arcana] costs 5,000 gp for the body, and another 6,000 gp on the market, or 3,000 gp + 240 XP for someone with Craft Construct or an Effigy Master. Most creatures of the "animal" type larger than Tiny size no longer exist, so living mounts are more likely to be exotica like nightmares, pegasai, gryphons, or exotic animals with the Magebred template from Eberron.

Sounds expensive all around. What is the rough outline of the "magebred" template? And what do Druids do for their animal companion (do urban druids handle it differently? Perhaps everyone just has wolf hounds.)

OOC 2: The Constitution check is basically to determine stamina, i.e. who gets there first... which believe it or not, does matter. (Not entirely related, but I'm not really certain why so many endurance-based activities use a Con check rather than a Fort save... you'd expect a Fighter to be naturally better at forced marching than a Wizard... hm.)

I think that since forced marching deal subdual damage, and those with large hitdice also have high fortitude saves, they figured it would be double dipping.

Magebred: applies only to animals. Costs 100 gp/HD. Gives +2 Natural Armor, -2 to Handle Animal DCs, 2 extra HA tricks maximum, 1 of 3: +10 ft speed, additional +2 Nat AC, or +4 Survival to track. +4 to Str or Dex or Con, +2 to the other two. Int is 2. Bonus Feat: Alertness, Athletic, Endurance, Improved Natural Attack, or Multiattack.
Most forms of transportation are fairly expensive, which is made up for the relative cheapness of magical communication; this cuts down on the commute and lets evil overlords do business from the comfort of their evil castle homes.

Interesting. All the more reason to pick up Whispering Wind (and Quall's feather tokens/Silver Raven wondrous figurine) next level, and to scribe Mount into my spellbook soon. Between Mount and Levitate (and later Fly or Overland Fly), I should be able to get where I'm going... in style!
