I have a similar view to EOL - party harmony is the most important thing (to me) - as the DM I can give the PCs more than enough to do without them bickering amoungst themselves.
I like to see players come up with original ideas (or at least clever interpretations of old ones) but if someone really wants to play Gandalf or Conan I'm not going to stop them . Besides once the character is made I find that the player rarely sticks to the initial inspiration - most characters grow out shaped by the experiences the player has with them.
The initial concept, I have found, is just a 'base coat', the adventures the PC has are the layers that shape him.
