POLL: DM or Player?

DM or Player?

I am both and like doing both, but before recently, I DMed about 90% of the time. I still DM a game, but I play in 2 others, so that's no longer the case. That said, I prefer DMing.

I used to be the GM for the first 6 years or so that my group roleplayed. Then I went to college and someone else stepped up. Whenever I came back from college though, he'd be wanting a break from running games, so I'd end up GMing. Since college, it's been a bit more varied and I've actually gotten to play a couple characters for as much as half-a-year in the same campaign.

That said, I usually have more inspiration to run games than I do for characters, DnD especially seems to nerf my character creativity.

I'd say with all my RPG xp combined, I'm about 15th level DM, 3rd level player.

Absolutely a player first, but a pretty good DM too. I like both, but am of the opinion that what most DMs want out of a game are player wants, not intentions a DM should ever follow. That DMs are making their games worse by running games they would prefer to play in vs. what the actual players want to play in is a widespread problem.

Usually DM and my group prefers it that way - they're player types. However, I do enjoy being a player occasionally, for variety and because you get to know what players *really* want.

Cheers, LT.

I've been playing D&D in some form since I was 10 (16 years now) and I'd say that 90% of that has been as DM. Initially I was a player and my babysitter was the DM, but once we moved I started being the Storyteller/DM for an entirely imagined game for my younger brother. No dice, no books, no rules other than what we thought seemed fair as we lay in our bunk bed and talked well past bedtime. Once we got the PHB and DMG for 2nd edition AD&D I was older and read better, so I got a handle on the rules quicker and thus ended up as the DM most times. That role has just kind of stuck with me over the years.

I play on occasion, and relish the opportunities I get to do so, but I prefer to DM. Partly this is due to my own tendency to try and use my own rules interpretations on DMs who aren't quite as flexible about things.

I'm only a player about a 1 on a d100 compared to a 2-100 on a d100 for DM'ing.;)

I do play occasionally but I only selected DM.

GM definitely. For at least 95% of the 30+ years I've been gaming I've been the GM and I wouldn't have it any other way. I actually don't like to play very much.

And I say GM not DM because I don't often play D&D. Oddly, it is the game I've had the most experience in as a Player. I find many Players are willing to DM D&D's particular brand of Medieval Fantasy but good SciFi/Superhero/Anime referees are hard to come by.
