Poll: Do you allow non-slotted CWI items?

PCs don't get to just invent any item the want. The table is for a *DM* to use, not for a PC to abuse.

So... no. But I do tend to create items that embody multiple effects, which is like having a non-slotted item, but you don't get to choose.

Yep, I do allow PCs to create non-slotted wonderous items. However, as a DM I'm working hand in hand with the PC to keep the proposed item balanced, anyway.

That and to be non-slotted, the item has to not occupy an already restricted slot; so no "it's a cloak, but it doesn't take the cloak slot". A cloak is a cloak, and cloaks take the cloak slot.

Ioun stones, musical instruments, figurines, tattoos and the like would be examples of non-slotted items. Alot of 'em fall into the category of Thing You Hold, rather than Thing You Wear.

About the ioun stones, I agree -- they're certainly slot-less. However, IMHO "Stuff You Hold" is a slot -- the weapon, rod, shield and wand slot, if you will. These items are usually easier to swap-out (shields being an exception), but they're taking up a slot and thus have an opportunity cost.

(Example from my game -- our Ranger1/Wiz6/EK4 often owns a Metamagic Rod of Lesser Quickening, a Cold Iron Rapier +2 and a MW Mithral Buckler. He's only got two hands, so which items he's holding vary for each combat.)

We use what we call the "Charm Slot". It's where you put your broach of shielding, token of Fortunate fate etc. It's not so much a realistic slot (ie gloves) it's a practical limitation on MIs.
