IMO D.A. Trampier is the Man. His works just ooze D&D to me. His 1e PHB cover is a work of genius. Or his picture of the Rakshasa. Or Emirikol the Chaotic. Or the dragon flattening kobolds. Or...

It was a toss-up between Otus and Jim Holloway - Holloway won. His style had a loose, good-humored, yet gritty feel to it.

My list usually goes like this:

1e

Jim Holloway
Erol Otus
Jeff Dee
Dave Trampier
Willingham
Roslof

2e

My favorite artist from the 2e era is Arnie Swekel. I loved his work in the Encyclopedia Magica. I first became acquainted with his work in Pendragon.

3e

Wayne Reynolds
Sam Wood
Todd Lockwood

Did Elmore do any 1e work? And if so, on what products?

In anycase, I voted for David A. Trampier. He defined the look and feel of D&D for me. And Wormy was just the coolest of all the old Dragon comics.

Has Wormy ever been collected into one volume? Was it included on the Dragon CDROM?

My other two votes would probably be for Erol Otus and Bill Willingham...

He worked on Dragonlance products as well as Dragon Magazine.

And although not technically 1e, Elmore also did lots of work on OD&D, during the 1e era. Most noteworthy were the covers of all the boxed sets: Basic set (3rd ed.), Expert (2nd), Companion, Masters, and Immortals.

Gotta be Easley. I can remember what got me into 1st edition was the awesome covers of the hardback books. Who doesn't like the DM's Guide cover or the Monster Manual cover or the Unearthed Arcana cover of 1e.

Wow, you're right. With the mediocre material that he's been putting out for 3e it's easy to forget what great work he was doing twenty years ago.

What about Clyde Caldwell?

Larry Elmore and Jeff Easley, as well as Clyde Caldwell would be the three names that come to my mind.

Who's Erol Otus and what kind of prominent pictures did he make?
I don't reckognize this name at all, but still he got quite a few votes!

He did a lot of the classic old school modules including D3 Vault of the Drow, A4 In the Dungeons of the Slave Lords and B3 Palace of the Silver Princess and probably a bunch of others that I can't think of right now.
