I refrained from voting as I don't own them. But, I would keep them for home use, but probably not transport them for in game use. My game use books tend to take a bit of a beating and have the pepperoni grease stains to prove it!

For those that use them, I wonder if the leatherbound books are able to handle the beating better than the regular ones - perhaps that is a reason to use them for gaming.

Not really. I inflict more pain smacking upside my player's head with a boxing glove than with the leather PHB.

Play with, most definitly. Leaving it on the shelf is as stupid as leaving a toy in the package to collect dust. Why not just take a picture if you don't intend to use it.
