IME, the GM out-buys the players by more then 50 to 1.
Your anecdotes match mine. I out-buy my players by probably AT LEAST 100 to 1 -- many of my players don't even buy dice.

They're stewardesses, whaddya want? :D

In the group that I DM, I'm pretty much the only one who owns stuff. Everyone had a 3.0 PH, but I'd say less than half the group upgraded to 3.5. One of the players is also a DM for some other campaigns so he and I do have quite a bit of overlap, but since he's also a DM that's a special case. The only other book that multiple people own is the one I wrote for Mongoose.

In the weeknight game I play in there's a bit more overlap of books. I think everyone has a 3.5 PH and multiple people have the Dawnforge Campaign Setting book and at least three of us have Arcana Unearthed. A few people also have Path of Legend (Dawnforge) and a few also have the new Expanded Psionics Handbook. They're a little more diverse than the group that I DM.

For D&D and D20 Modern, I'm the only one that buys new material. For SW D20, however, two of my players (a husband and wife duo) own the Core Rules. This works out alright for me (at least for right now, once I get married however....) since they don't read through any of the books expect when they need to look up a special ability or spell. It allows me to keep the game fresh and keeps the metagaming to an absolute minimum.

Over the years (20+) I have never gamed with anyone who didn't own at least there own PH, or get it soon after joining the group I was in.

As for multiple books usually not beyond the PH.

i have. the first 8 years or so i gamed only 1 other guy in the group owned more than just dice.

the newer breed of gamers seems to buy everything. adventures, supplements, hardbacks, etc...

I have been with more groups over the years than I have fingers and toes. Therefore, I tend to buy almost anything that interests me. Being that I am with multiple groups currently, mostly as a GM, I have two complete sets of the core rules and an extra two PHBs. Thats right, 4 PHBs, 2 MMs and 2 DMGs. Why you ask? One core rule set plus extra phb for travel, and the other set on my bookshelves with my final copy of my phb at my desk - where my computer is - and where I do most of my campaign work.
