Care to explain the "two and a half married couples" line? I'm quite curious how that's possible...

Well, I am a very animated DM.

I give as many NPCs as possible distinct mannerism and "voice" (but not always accents or funny voice - just manners of speech).

I also am a firm believer that "first person" role=playing is better than "third person" role-playing and make sure my players do it all the time.

Only when moving into "quick time" (you know, "over the next several days, blah blah, blah -which rarely happens in my games) is third person RPing allowed.

If someone says something like "I tell the guard that I am supposed to be here at this time."

I would reply with "Then tell him."

When Im a player, I usually say "I step forward and attack", but usually it is sort of out character because I say things like (pointing to square on map) "I go here, I attack the goblin, and I roll a 3"

So im sort of in character... sort of... everyone else just says "Foobo the Red Steps uses his lightning spell" and then rolls, saying "i got a (whatever)"

The group isnt really into the whole "acting" thing, and since we are all in High School, most of what we do is just hack and slash. Very little roleplaying involved, unless its to the DMs advantage.

DM "Im sorry, but i cant allow your palidin to save the rest of the *evil* party. Its against his alignment."

Player: "fine! ill change my alignment and do it anyway"

DM: "but you will lose all your nifty spells and abilities..."

Player: "Nevermind. I'll just let you evil party members die. Sorry."

Other Players: "What!!!" *grab traitor, give him a noogie*

DM: "MWMMWMWMAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH"

Its... Complex, at least, but they all sorted it out. The kids playing are both mine, theirs is too little right now. They all get along famously, since they were all friends before he married one and kept sleeping with the other... Its complex. He's a moron. But, hey, it works for them. In the words of the ex-wife, "Your game is worth the discomfort."

I'm always in charecter when I roleplay. I do voices, pantomine waving my hands to cast a spell, or swing a sword, toast other charecters and generally get animated.

I do the same when I DM.

I think in a large part it is due to me having an extensive LARP backround and being used to constantly being in charecter.

My group mixes it up. Everyone at some point or another gets in chracter and first person, but some people far more than others.

As a player I try stay IC, including now and then answering obviously OOC comments ICy. As a DM I try to address players by the character names to keep up the mood. I only use 'funny accents' when appropriate, but try to pick a certain hook or character type to make the NPC's memorable and sometimes try to base mannerisms of a character off fictional characters I know well. It just helps being consistent, though this has had mixed results.
