[Poll] Your favorite edition for Castle Zagyg

Favorite edition for CZ

Gygax Games has withdrawn all licenses from Troll Lord Games, incuding the one for CZ.

Assuming you have interest in this product, and if you could choose, which edition would you pick for the castle?

I haven't listed separately "retro clones" games, because this is not a question about a vehicle for publishing but rather about preferred edition for playing CZ.

All publishing concerns aside- playing it OD&D (little brown books) is the way to go , IMO- although it's not wholly the same as the original CG dungeons, it's the direct descendant.

Although I love 4E I didn't vote that way, and wouldn't want to see GG go that route publishing-wise. Were it not a business concern due to "questionable" use of the OGL, I'd love to see it published under Swords & Wizardy, or a similar white box clone.

For a fully fleshed out and (over-)detailed version of the Castle, which is what Gary seemingly wanted and what CZ:UW (from what I gather, still haven't actually seen it) delivered, I think 1E AD&D -- the fully fleshed out and (over-)detailed version of Gygax's D&D -- is the best fit. For a more loose and freewheeling treatment based on the original hand-drawn maps and notes from the 70s (what I'm still holding out hope we'll eventually see -- yeah Gary said he didn't want to release something like that, but he also said he wanted to continue working with TLG and Jeff Talanian and we saw how that turned out...) then the more loose and freewheeling OD&D would be the better fit.

My vote: Other.

And with that, I specify: "as systemless as possible"

It's not practical at all (maybe using the OGL somehow, it would be slightly more practical), but that'd please the most people. I for one would run it in 4e, but I would -- if I absolutely would have to choose a system -- like to see it in C&C or AD&D (maybe 2E because I'm familiar with it). C&C because all of the other CZ stuff is in that format currently, AD&D because that's where the best Greyhawk stuff still resides.

Just as an off-hand comment that might get me killed: I feel like Rappan Athuk Reloaded has a sufficiently old-school feel to it, doesn't worry too much about "balance" but isn't so totally out of whack...in essence, I think it gets the 1st edition Feel, 3rd edition rules thing perfect, so I suspect CZ could be in any D&D derivative and fit fairly well.

Yet, even though I like 4e, I could definitely see CZ not fitting nearly as well with it's style of play.

I voted other.

I think Castle Zagyg should be a system unto itself. Use the OGL and build a system that supports Mr. Gugax's vision, and include that in the "box" or "book" or what have you.

One system, one dungeon.

But for commercial success, I'd say go with 4e. Then I might to get to play it s well.
