While on the material plane, my character is polymorphed into an outsider, gaining this type. If someone casts dismissal on him, does he get sent to the plane where this outsider usually resides, or do I get sent back to my normal plane of existence (the material plane), or does the spell simply do nothing?

What edition are you playing?

If it's 3.5: Have you checked the polymorph errata?

There are no polymorph errata.

The 'polymorph' errata affect everything that used to default on polymorph to default (IIRC) on alternate form instead.

Polymorph itself is untouched.
WotC advises not to use it.

That said: I suspect that when you polymorph to an outsider, you gain the outsider type, probably making you a Native Outsider, which means you are on your home plane and when 'dismissed' nothing happens.

If, however, you cast polymorph while on another plane, I'm not sure.

(Presuming 3.5)
I didn't think you could polymorph into an outsider.

Wow ... you are so correct. It's not on the list. Well, that solves that for my paladin character, but my backup character is an outsider himself, so when he alters self into another outsider, I'm guessing I still would have to worry about the dismissal problem -- only not, because it won't work.

Thanks for that catch, Radmod. I'm glad I haven't tried to turn into an outsider yet -- my first ever polymorph was into a monstrous humanoid.
