Possible new job would have pay cut -update! I got the job!

BiggusGeekus

That's Latin for "cool"
My situation:

I'm unemployed and kind of burnt out. I have a job offer in the works, but the deal could still go bad. The job itself is OK. Nothing to write home about though. The only real "wow" part of it is that I'd be working on a college campus which would hopefully have a gym for me to use.

I would also be accepting a 10% pay cut.

I have a wife (who is also employed) and a two year old daughter, so I can't screw around and be unempolyed and I can't screw around and take a lower paying job.

Any advice?

EDIT! I got the job!

Well, I'm still looking at a pay cut of about 8%. But! I'll be interfacing with upper level management more often. So basically I'm being groomed for management material. Plus, this job may require a security clearance. So in the long term I could be making double! Not bad! :D

Take the job. Keep looking for something better on the horizon. I had a friend who refused to take a pay cut and ended up unemployed for over a year and was forced to sell his home and go from no debt to a lot of debt.

Gotta go with Belen on this one, BG. Having to take a pay cut sucks, but it's better to get back out there.

Huh?

How is having a job a 10% pay cut to not having a job? Are unemployment benefits in Noodleland really that high?

He doesn't have the job yet, it's pending. If he gets it, it will be a 10% pay cut compared to his last job. Right, BG?

Just chiming in to agree with the others. 90% pay is better than no pay, and taking a pay cut looks much better on a resume than a long period of unemployment.

Yeah. Good point. They are offering well under industry standard, so it's not a dream to say I could get more elsewhere. But at this point I'm too tired to care and that will probably reflect in my next interview.

About the gym: Imagine you were paying for a gym membership. How much would you pay per year? Add in an hourly cost for travel time to and from the pretend-gym. If you really want a gym, this amount should be discounted from yoru wage decrease. If you don't want a gym enough to pay for it, don't consider the gym a selling point.

Beyond that - working at all, even for crappy pay, is better than not working. For a while, I did substitute teaching work, which paid $50 per day. But just having something, anything, helped my morale (and thus my job interviews) considerably.

Yeah, I think the only savings I would get is travel time. It wouldn't be free. Which is still something.

**** it. I'll take the job if they offer. If I don't I'll probably go into some kind of negative feedback loop and end up playing World of Warcraft all day.

If you're interested in taking classes, you might get that for free out of it too.

I wouldn't. It's a non-profit that has offices at GMU. I wouldn't be University staff. I would be some guy who happens to work near co-eds.
