Possibly a stupid question, but. . .

The only time I make a PrC is if a player wants something very specific that doesn't really exist. I have made a few unique magic items. I made a few spells, but see little reason to do that anymore.

Mostly, I stick to the basic stuff.

The game isn't made interesting by having unique stuff. It's made interesting by using the existing stuff well.

Tinkering is my base nature.

If I were dropped into Limbo, I'd have a seizure from sheer, unmitigated joy. And afterward, reshape Limbo on such a grand scale as to stupefy Githzerai and make Slaadi weep.

I used to tinker with rules like crazy. It's slowed down since, but my homebrew CS is going to be a combo of Tolkienesque elements with "RL" mythology, folklore and religious elements (in theme) combined with D&D 3.5 core, Iron Heroes, a few select splatbooks more or less wholesale, a bunch of bits and pieces from most of WotC's other releases and a ton of monsters, PrCs, classes, races, feats, and other mechanics all made from scratch.

I LOVE to tinker :D

cheers,

In response to the original post: I do make my own magic items if I feel like it and encourage my players likewise. The last campaign I ran, most of the items available were either of my or my players' devise.

I'm currently designing a new campaign. At one point, I was designing a magic system that would allow players to make up their own spells- hopefully as flexible as HERO or M&M. The Spellseeds from Epic were difficult to scale down to non-epic levels and I found that offerings from 3rd party publishers covering the same ground were probably not similar enough to Core for my players.

Then I realized my players were probably too conservative to take advantage of this kind of magic system in general- especially since it would be mandatory, due to the nature of the campaign.

OTOH, I may just use one of those systems anyway- the campaign is radical enough they may not be interested in playing in it anyway...

When I woke up this morning, I had absolutely no intention of doing any homebrewing of my own. The question was prompted by another thread here. That said, I figured that if I lament the demise of the "rule tinker", I'd best contribute to keeping them alive. So, in my free time this evening, I cooked up this. . .

Blood of Kings

Yes, I must conclude that you and I would have a Glorious Competition of Tinkering. Limbo would never be the same again... (As if not stating the obvious)

Creating new monsters and pimping the old ones is my favourite pass-time.

Mind if I join in? :)

I have tinkered with creating my own creatures.

I have made a few magical items but with the sole-purpose of being a plot device.

There is so much out there already made/tested/balanced that I find little need to do so especially when time is a major consideration for me (work 70+ hrs a week)
