Possibly Stoopid Question for Non-Americans

Andrew D. Gable

First Post
For some reason, this popped in my head this morning. Do non-Americans have any sort of holiday thing at July 4? I'm really doubting it, but I don't know.

Not really, in Canada our beginning-of-July holiday is July 1st (Canada Day). I doubt other countries have a vacation on the same day as the US. If they do, it's likely a matter of coincidence more than anything else.

Why would they?

I mean, seriously.

Canada Day is July 1 because on that date in 1867 the Confederation was implemented. Not because it happens to be at the beginning of July, and certainly not because it bears any relationship to the Independence Day holiday in the States. It happens to be on the same date as the national holidays of Burundi and Rwanda, but I suspect that's a coincidence (but maybe we should be setting up joint celebrations?).

February 5 is Día de la Constitución in Mexico, July 14 is Bastille Day in France and June 25 is National Day in Slovenia. Most countries have some sort of holiday celebrating their creation. None have theirs on July 4 except the United States.

Nope, countries have national holidays on the anniversaries of events relevant to them. I guess Christmas and Easter are fairly common national holidays for a lot of countries, as is probably New Year's Day.

For example, we don't celebrate July 4th (US Independence Day) or Thanksgiving (again, a US-specific holiday); we do celebrate November 5th (Guy Fawkes Day/Bonfire Night), which commemorates the day that Guy Fawkes failed to blow up Parliament (although we don't have a national holiday on that day - just an example of a country-specific event).

Fixed that for you ;)

Yeah, you're right, Andrew - that question IS a little stupid. However, since the ENWorld community is a loving home, we shall embrace you to our collective bosom and pretend we didn't hear the question.

I didn't follow the link above, but after an obligatory 7/4 note annoyed me at another forum I discovered that the 4th of July is also Rwandas national day...

HTH

Commonwealth-specific event :) We do Guy Fawkes here too :)

Damn it, we need to bring back Empire Day! What better excuse to play The Imperial March and walk around in white armour? :)
