The USPS has recently announced it is going to reconfigure the postage rate system for periodicals. In the past up to today, the Postage Rate for smaller periodicals has been less than for larger periodicals to encourage new ideas and allow start up periodicals to compete and survive with more established names. This is a tradition going back to Thomas Jefferson and James Madison, who considered this tiered system essential for the 1st Amendment to have any practical effect.
The new system that is going to be placed into effect, is going to be the reverse of the old system. It is going to lower the rates for large periodicals and raise the rates for small and start up periodicals.... sometimes by upwards of 30%.
Now I know this post is perilously close to violating the no politics rule of ENWorld, but given the Impact this new USPS postal fee system might have on Dragon/Dungeon, and the huge barrier of entry to it will impose to start up a magazine... ie if you wanted to create a company to compete with Paizo by creating a Fantasy SRD D20 compliant magazine, the USPS Postal monopoly just increased your costs by 30%..... I believe it is something we should discuss.
Eric or James what effect will this have on the Subscription or Cover price for Dragon/Dungeon? Will one of the most vital forces in D&D have to raise it's price?
Lets try to limit comments to the impact on our hobby. As an aside those that would like to encourage Congressional hearings on this matter prior to any extreme changes may go here: www.stoppostalratehikes.com
