Potion use question

I assume that you need two hands free to use a potion - one to hold the vial, one to unscrew the cap - true/ false?. How does a potion belt work?.

To unwhat the what now? I doubt that potions use screws - a cork seems much more appropriate to the setting, and you can pop those off with your thumb.

And really, anyone used to dealing with screw-tops can do them one-handed too. Pretty much everyone in the biochem program at my college could by their junior or senior year, especially those of us that took microbiology.

But yeah, I agree a cork is more likely what you'd find, and I imagine that for ease of use in combat they would be easy to just opo open and drink.

Maybe I'm imaginating things, but IIRC, potion vials are usually stoppered with corks, and the whole tip of the vial + cork is dipped in wax so it stays in place and is hermetic.

the rules don't specify that you need two hands. just one.

potion belts are like organizers. so you know where to reach for the potion of X.

No rules. Same for scrolls: some DMs absolutely requires the use of two hands for scrolls, some others don't care. I don't care. I think it's much less trouble to just allow to use a potion/scroll with a hand than to think too much.

Last I checked I had enough hand strength and manual dexterity to hold a cyllindrical object in my hand (weapon hilt?) and still use a finger or two to work an object held in the other hand. You don't need both hands open unless you don't have thumbs. Disclamor: However, this is my personal experience, and your milage may vary.

Edit: It occurs to me that I might need to point out that I was referring to weapons, and not other cyllindrical objects... and it amuses me to have to point that out.

Bah! You use your fingers? REAL adventurers pry off the corks/screw tops with their TEETH! And after they drink the potion they crush the vial against their forehead!
