Power Attack + Champion of Corellon's Elegant Strike.

As a DM I was going to rule in our home game that since the Elegant Strike is precision based damage that it would not get multiplied the way damage from Strength would be for a power attack. For example, an 18 strength, 16 dexterity Champion of Corellon with Elegant Strike while power attacking for 3 would do (4 * 2) + 3 in damage instead of (4 + 3) * 2.

In other words, I would be treating the dex based damage akin to extra dice damage instead of a straight modifier to damage. From a strict reading of the rules it looks like I should rule the other way. That the dex. based damage gets multiplied by times 2 with the strength based damage.

What do people think?

Elegant strike: You are able to place your attacks where they deal greater damage. You aply your dex bonus to damage rolls(in addition to any str bonus you may have).

Strength bonus is not multiplied by Power Attack. Why are you doubling your Strength bonus, and what does Power Attack have to do with either of the equations you listed?

I, like my small blue friend over there, am confused.

Are you talkin' about critical hits? Cuz in that case it should be multiplied.

What is Elegant Strike (PrC ability, feat, etc)? What exactly does it do?

It's a Champion of Corellon PrC special ability from Races of the Wild. Without quoting exactly, because I'm in a hurry, it adds your DEX mod to damage (in addition to standard damage bonuses) with certain weapons. The damage isn't applied to the usual suspects unnaffected by crits and sneak attacks.

Also, to my amateur glance, he does appear to be talking about its application during a critical hit. :)

Definately would be a house rule as the Dex bonus to damage from Elegant Strike is simply stacked with Strength bonus to damage.

I don't recall right now, but is Elegant Strike restricted to the specific weapon that the character wields (IIRC prerequisites for the PrC include Weapon Focus (longsword) or Exotic Weapon Proficiency (elven thinblade or courtblade))?

Also, if the exotic weapons are light weapons, then no Power Attack with those.

Now, back to you calculations, let's say the character in question is wielding a longsword with the above stats (excluding the base 1d8 damage for the longsword):

Standard damage = +4 (Str) +3 (ES) = +7
Power Attack for 3 = +4 (Str) +3 (ES) +3 (1-handed PA) = +10

Now wielded in 2 hands, the damage would be:

Standard damage = +6 (1.5x Str bonus to damage) +3 (ES) = +9
Power Attack for 3 = +6 (1.5x Str bonus to damage) +3 (ES) +6 (2-handed PA) = +15

Of course, you could compare these against criticals and your house rule, but I leave that as an exercise to others. :)

Sorry for being unclear. I did garble the question BADLY.

Thanks Legildur for seeing through that fog of a question and getting to the point of what I was realling trying to ask.

Anways, the Elegant Strike applies to: longsword, shortsword, scimitar, elven thinblades, elven lightblades, and elven courtblades.
