No Trouble at All
Somewhere in an official rulebook I know I saw a sidebar on "Power Components". The idea was that instead of having to lose XP, make your spellcasters seek out appropriate things to use as components.

I really like this idea for two reasons:
* Spellcasters shouldn't fall behind their fellows in level simply for being spellcasters.
* This makes for fun side-plot ideas, as the heroes hunt down phase spider eggs and a displacer beast heart to make those Bracers of Displacement.

So, that said, I'm wondering on guidelines to use. Something like "every 50 XPs replaced is a CR1 encounter". That might not actually be a monster that must be slain, but perhaps the black clay from the river of death that is needed will end up exposing the quester to certain dangers.

Thoughts?

Pg 96 DMG is where you can find Power Components.

I use specific items for specific circumstances. Want to make your sword +1 shocking? Grind up the bones of a blue dragon and add it to the weapon and you pay only half XP cost for that improvement. THings like that.
