One of my favortie plot devices was pretty up there as far as powerful items a campaign might see. I'm certain I blatantly stole it from a twilight zone episode, but I steal from so many things it's hard to keep track.
Basically, it was a pendant of divine origin that would cast a super powerful version of wish, once, for every individual. (It could essentially command all the magic available to gods and men to make some want come true.) The twist was, not that your wording would be twisted (as by wishes granted by a manevolent dm or other spirit), but that the true secret want, the wish you might not even consiously know to ask would be fullfilled, in some specific and unpredictable manner. The rules for the item are really what put it into the plot device box.
Few things were not subject to its power. Oddly enough, everything surrounding it, despite the potential for abuse, by player and dm alike really, came off relatively well, but for other reasons the campaign didn't come together in a totally satisfiying manner.
For whatever reason (Maybe it had to do with the flogging of deus ex machina in another thread), I started wondering about what other monsertously powerful plot devices have made it into other peoples adventures. And what the rules and limits of those devices were.
So dust them off oil them up show them off. It's all about you. Did they allow mortals to defy Gods, become them, lay low countries with a single blow?
