[PR] Elmore Productions

Interesting idea, but I do have to wonder how successful this will be for him from a financial point of view. I mean, the free pdf already covers all the drawings in the book, and is OGL/Clip Art itself.

Sure, if you plunk down your $20, you get a nice hardcopy book, plus high-res versions of the portraits on a CD. But what will be the ratio of people that will use the free pdf, versus those that pay money for the high-res version?

The pictures in the PDF are pretty pixelated, even if they are only going to be used on a Web page. They aren't going to print very well, either (if someone is concerned about that).

I think this is a cool idea, myself.

It seems to me...

It seems to me that the best use for this product would be for free magazines/articles supplements ("Jeb Sutherland's Guide To Dwarves", "Alex Finkelstein's Arcane Anarchy") and placeholder art as well as character sheets.

That isn't a bad thing: that's more or less how other kinds of clipart have been used in the past. I doubt it will get used much in printed products.

Let's hope that this product is thought of as nothing more than just that, clip art and used in a like manner. No offence to Mr. Elmore, who is a very good cover artist and to those who might want to use this product, but it is a bit of a thorny issue with a good number of us interior artists who make our living doing this. Thing is, I can't afford to flood the market with my work. Just as well, I say, as I wouldn't want to cheapen it's value.

Regarding the image resolution, I imagine that might be one incentive to buy the printed product. You could get much better resolution, I'm sure, by scanning it in yourself.

A good point brought up on the main rpg/ccg illustration list is that if anything, this product would be used in products by companies that don't pay artists anyway, thus weeding them out of the market and leaving the companies that do pay for the rest of us. Therefore, it will be handy for that. I am not sweating losing any work because of it.

I know that Larry had no intentions of hurting any artists by taking away work from them. If anything, he likes to help artist, especially artists just breaking in. If this product does well, perhaps Volume 2, produced by Elmore, will be done by some of you artist posting in this forum. This type of product may give artists work!! His intention was just to help gamers have fun. I do not see a major company using all clip art for the interior of their product...why, when any other company could do the same thing! I think this product was designed for individuals that love to game and that needs more character shots, or for the VERY small companies that can't afford to pay for art in the first place. Perhaps the clip art could be used as filler here and there--especially in magazines. All you good black and white artists should contact Mr. Elmore and see he needs some quick line art drawings for Volume 2 !!! I have heard for a fact that he spent no more than 10 minutes per drawing.
