As for fracturing the gaming community...I don't get that. We're all gamers, right? So what does it matter what system we use? Plus, why does it have to be a "versus" mentality? We have the capacity to enjoy more than one system. Personally, I like a variety of systems. I'm going to be buying both the Pathfinder and 4e rules. Not everyone has the money to buy both, but if the books are available at the game table through other players, there's no reason why a person can't enjoy both.

I think this issue is mostly noticible in small towns where there just aren't many groups to chose from. If there's only one RPG group available in the whole town, only one of which willing to DM and they can't agree on a system, the group could break up.

Logically, though, they'd find a compromise. Or, more likely, follow the DM. But, not everybody's logical, and with DDI there will be an option to find groups online.

I bring this up as I'm moving to a town without even a game store. (There's one in a neighbouring town, but I won't be able to get there regularly.) I know that if I have any chance of finding a gaming group, (which I'm not even sure there are any), there won't be much choice in the matter.

I think it's a great move for Paizo. I wonder if the market will slowly fragment more over the next 8 years. Third Edition and d20 brought many back to the D&D fold. 4E may bring in new players who were hitherto not part of the fold. Wizards will succeed with their game. However, will the common platform of d20 slowly cease being the common ground? Only time will tell.

Wouldn't surprise me to see a Pathfinder Freeport Companion book one day, but then again, it depends how close the final product is to 3.5. No need to do another one if the 3.5 one works just as well. (Although if it's out of print, then....anything goes.)

The d20 Freeport Companion just came out this week. I went to the store to pick up something else and it was in the new release section. I'm using True20 for my own Freeport campaign, but the d20 version looks to have a lot interesting looking crunch if you are still playing 3.5.

I agree with Chris on this. It is a PR hit. It will fracture the audience. And, the other companies don't need to compete with WotC, just make enough to fund themselves. I really like the work of both GR and Paizo, and hope they both support 4E at some point. However, I'm quite annoyed with WotC for not supplying the GSL. I can't help but wonder if this is intentional on their part.

Or they may be trying to avoid putting out an interim GSL which is finalized much later (like the OGL). Then again, I could have wished that WotC/Hasbro would have decided what they would do and get a much bigger leap.
