Prayer Strips

I've seen them mainly in the Chinese Wuxia movies. I always thought they were protective or banishment magic - the Monk taps them on the head of the demon and the demon screams and gets thrown back into a wall. Like a very vigorous Circle:Pro Evil or something.

I was thinkning that they should be modeled like potions, which are normally protective, or enhancing effects, but there is nothing that would stop more aggressive spells from being used, just no one would drink them. I don't know how to handle flying stips of paper in the rules though.

Try to reference "Ofuda"

I know the OA Shugenja uses these strips of paper with writing on them as divine focus.

And I have seen a lot of anime characters use them in various ways...summoning beasts, igniting them on fire, etc. Divine focus seems fairly relevant. They always seems fairly religious in use.

I'm also kind of interested in those staffs some of the wise ones carry around...with the collection of rings on the top and such? Also intrigues me...

But, yeah, I'd treat the ofuda basically like a divine scroll...no problems. :)

In OA there's an item called Sacred Ofuda -- stick it on the forehead of an undead creature and it can't move.

I sent a wacky group of Napoleonic-era heroes through the old Ravenloft module -- one of the characters was a Chinese kung fu master who had a couple of sacred ofuda. I had him make touch attacks that drew AoO (even with Improved Unarmed Attack, since it's not just a punch), and made rolls every so often to see if it would blow off.

Made for a great ending to the adventure as the scroll blew off Strahd's forehead just as the cleric was lining up with a stake!

I just wanted to add that whilst browsing the list of topics I had to double take on this topic: I had to wonder who was having the problem with their players undressing (I saw Player Strips)! :D

Kinda like Psionic Crawling Tattooes, I guess. Tattoo of Concussion creeeps up your arm, then blows your head off. Shaman slaps strip of paper to demon's head, again we see the blow-your-head-off effect. Me like. :)

In the 3x3 Eyes manga there is your average undead teenager (Fuji Yakumo), every once in a while he encouters one of these things, and just falls over limp. Always got a kick out of it since he's practically unstoppable, then gets taken out by an overblown post-it note.

You think in Modern you could use post-it-notes? It would make Office Depot pretty poular with long robed monks.

So, is Ofuda and Fu the same thing? I remember that item now from OA, I had forgotten about it.

What is the name and significance of the three ring staffs, anyway?
