PrC for a Fighter/Thief

I have a friend who is new to D&D and is starting a new character and wants to play a fighter/thief and I would like to steer him towards a PrC that would accentuate both aspects. Any PrC from any WotC book is fair game.

Just a straight fighter/rogue (not thief) is a decent combo. If he's new to D&D, why complicate matters by introducing PrCs?

I'd recommend going rogue/swashbuckler and taking that feat (what's its name?) from Complete Scoundrel that lets rogue and swashbuckler levels stack for the purposes of sneak attack, grace, and something else - possibly Uncanny Dodge.

At any rate, the combo was already very nice for a dex-focused character - with this it is even nicer. If he wants lots of skill points and the rogue special abilities, he can continue advancing as a rogue. If he wants BAB and HP, he can continue advancing as a Swashbuckler.

I would recommend Duelist but... the class is considered to be sorta weak (why is that again?). I've actually thought of allowing their class abilities in Light armor to power it up just a bit.

If your game is fairly city-centered, Streetfighter (Comp Adv) is a good choice for fighter/rogues, from what I've seen in my games.

Nightsong Enforcer is a good pick. Fighter BAB, some sneak attack, and a few other abilities. Prereqs are something like hide and MS 10 ranks and improved init. All around a solid class, I think.

First of all, welcome to the boards - the both of you!

I agree that you don't need a PrC for that combo. Fighter/rogue or Swashbuckler/rogue are fine.

Also, you could use one of the class variants from Unearthed Arcana:

There's the thug, a Fighter that gets more skill savvy but loses the 1st-level bonus feat and medium/heavy armour.

There's also small variants that let a fighter trade in his bonus feats for sneak attack (can be used with thug, too) or a rogue who does the opposite.

One point with a fighter/rogue is that a rogue has nearly the BAB of a fighter. Over 4 levels, youonly lose one BAB, and gain a lot of nice skills to make your fighter much more than a sword swinger. Add in some fighter feats, and a few levels of d10 hit points, plus having a good con, and it will be hard to tell the Rogue/fighter form the light single-class fighter.

If you wantto be a dwarf/ffighter, Teh deepwarden form Races of Stone is good. 6 skill point per level, full BAB and some otehr decent abilities. Not overpowered, but solid.

If you play stright Fighter/Rogue then the feat Able Learner from Races of Destiny really helps out. The ability to not have to pay more for skills during your fighter levels is invaluable to conserving this resource (skill points).

Also, you really want to start as level 1 rogue for the long term skill point advantages.
