Prc for Cleric

greycastle

First Post
As my paladin aka prestige class was hashed (as the hopes of so many others before and after me) and the persistent badgery of my party and my willingness to try new things i'm going a good ol' Cleric.

However i was wondering what the 'best' prestige classes (at least mainly official sources) are out there, and which you would recommend taking (including Faerun sources.)

Cheers

Straight cleric is pretty good. There are not many PrC that are really that great.

All in all it depends a lot on your concept, as PrC can enhance part of the cleric's ability while neglecting others.

Don't have the book on me, but I believe the name of this PrC is Sacred Exorcist. It allows full progress of your spells and your turning ability, and in 3.5, you can qualify for it around 10th level (there's a skill requirement which is a cross class skill for clerics in 3.0, but a class skill in 3.5).

Also, if your deity allows it (and your DM is crazy enough to give it to you), there's a PrC that gives you the Celerity domain, in addition to your other domains. This this is way too powerful.

The two above are from the Paladin/Cleric splatbook. This last one is from FRCS: Divine Disciple. Gives you an additional domain, and also permanent Protection from Evil after only 5 levels! Boo-yah!

It is surely good, but there are some PrCl which give everything (BAB, saves, HD, spellcasting) except Turn Undead and domain powers upgrade (but you can choose some domains whose power doesn't scale, like Luck, Trickery, Good/Evil/Law/Chaos for example).

Ok, please let me avoid quoting now because I am sure I would quote wrong, it's quite a long time since I used my Defenders of the Faith. But I think that there are at least couple of PrCl from that book which give you the above and add in a few special abilities, and then check out Faiths and Pantheons: I don't own it, but I browsed into it last year when I was writing up my cleric PC. The book had several strong PrCl, but eventually I found only one to which I could have qualified (Auspician), because they tend to have either specific requirements (such as having one exact domain) or require some "wasted" feats or high skill ranks. But I think I remember that there were very strong ones.

Hospitaler from DotF grants Full BAB, but Will saves take a dive.

You retain Turning ability and your spellcasting, gain lay on hands, gain 4 bonus fighter feats over 9 levels.

5 ranks in Handle animal and Ride, as well as the feats Mounted Combat and Ride-by-Attack, and Lawful alignment are the requirements.

I really like the Contemplative from DoTF...

Full spell advancement with a nice laundry list of special abilities...easy to qualify for as well. Good class.

Staying with pure core books, the Thaumaturgist is at least interesting for a cleric with focus on mental attributes, who himself uses spells like Order's Wrath rather than Righteous Might in combat. He does not lose any caster or spell levels, so he always has the best Summon Monster spells available. The Trickery domain can make him invisible while summoning. In addition, he can use planar allies efficiently. One stupid thing: You waste a feat for Spell Focus (Conj.), which is of (nearly) no use for a Cleric.

If, however, you want to be a strong hacker and slayer who destroys undead, forget this PrC.
