D&D 4E [Pre-4E] "The Shadow of Set" [Roster Set]

Had some more time to think about this, beyond the knee-jerk "gotta post, FAST" reaction that really doesn't do much justice to anyone involved. Really need to take more time with this stuff, I do.

So. Let me do this again, and try to come up with something a little less crude....

(For the record, I was thinking Gnome originally, but I'm keeping 4E in mind and there've been persistent rumors that Gnomes are going the way of the dodo. At least in the short term. Halfling works well enough, though, assuming that it's not entirely out of place in this particular setting.)

G'Sharn Siroc
Lawful Neutral Halfling Druid

History:
G'Sharn is a wanderer, an outcast from his nomadic tribe for reasons that he flatly refuses to discuss. He's spent the last few years acting as a guide for various caravans, and knows the desert like the back of his own hand. Or so he maintains....

He's made it his business to deal with, in a generally fatal manner, any bandits, marauders, or evil-doers that he should happen across. He has no compunction about killing such creatures in their sleep, and leaving their corpses for the vultures.

He's been in Majoor for nearly a month now, although he's not at all sure why this is. The city makes him uncomfortable; the noise gives him a headache, the smell makes him nauseous, and the less said about the sights, the better.

But something is keeping him here. And G'Sharn knows better than to betray his own instincts.

Appearance:
G'sharn generally keeps himself wrapped in a tattered brown burnoose, with only his eyes visible. His voice is a harsh rasp, oddly deep for such a small figure, but he speaks only rarely in most company.

Primary Weapon: Scimitar

Armor: Leather

Animal Companion: None, actually. I'd forgotten that the PHBII Wild Shape variant also replaces the animal companion. Shame that. It brings up a question, though...how does this interact with the Druidic Avenger variant, which *also* replaces the companion? I have to admit, the idea of shapeshifting into a raging bobcat has a certain appeal.

Feat: Improved Initiative.

Advancement:
G'Sharn is a very "claws-on" sort of fighter, and his feats and spell selection will largely be concentrated on making him effective in melee. Depending on the situation with Druidic Avenger, I'm thinking of taking a level or three of Barbarian at some point.

Funny, I had the same question when I used these same variants for a new group I started over the weekend. The shapeshift / lack of animal companion is subsumed into the Druidic Avenger variant (in other words, you don't lose anything additional instead of animal companion if you choose Druidic Avenger).

That's the path I'd take with G'Sharn, then. Which really does sound like fun.

I to get back into playing D&D. My in-person group fell apart as everyone left for college and i'm only really in M&M games on here now. So I submit to you:

DIRK REDHAND, Neutral Good Half-Orc Ranger

Dirk is a Half Orc born in Majoor. His race being what it was, he was subjected to ridicule as a child but found solace in the quiet and empty Blasted Desert. He has grown to love the Desert and spends most of his time there, helping caravans find there way through the sea of sand and acting as a guide to anyone who needs it.

He'll be neutral good, now wanting to get involved with other people's problems but good at heart. He'll have the Favored Environment instead of Enemy class option, with his environment being Desert. He'll be an archery based Ranger, using a Longbow and probably a Falchion for backup. Feat wise, probably Point Blank Shot. Major skills will be Survival, Knowledge (?), and Ride. Hopefully, when he gets an animal companion, he will be more like camelry. Mounted Archery feat and such, riding around on a camel and shooting things. He'll probably stick to straight up Ranger, but if something comes up he likes, might take it. His God will be (as he spends lots of time in the Desert) Arden.

Also, would it be possible for him to be a Desert Half-Orc from the Racial variants?

Lum of Deeplake

Dwarf favored soul of Dumathoin, Keeper of secrets under the mountain (or desert in this case :)

Lum is born in Deeplake clan deep under the desert. It's location is secret as there are many surface dwellers that would like to know about essentialy endless water supply in the middle of the desert.

Everyone know there are dwarves under the desert, their wares readily found with merchants ready to venture into desert.

Lum is born to blacksmith family and was supposed to apprentice to his father. As he grew up several features marked him appart from the rest of his family. Priests soon recognized his nature. Lum is skilled craftsman and he traveled to surface world where he could make a living (or so he believed) without shadow of his father - it would also give dwarves of the desert more contacts and their blacksmith above was getting old and wanting to retire.

Small dwarven community in Majoor always took pains to be as independant from the rest as possible and they had most of craftsmen within their ranks along with warriors, priests and occasional rune smith. Before coming up to surface, Lum was shortly (for dwarves)apprenticed to a rune smith priest (for several years).

Finding way through the desert is never easy or without danger and Lum travelled with several others and with a guide, a half-orc no less. Yet, in the desert everyone will become equaly bleached skeleton if not working together.

Safely in Majoor, Lum is helping old blacksmith in his last years before he retires. But he is no longer satisfied with simple life of blacksmith after he saw wider world above. As of yet he didn't try anything but waits for an opportunity ...

Contrary to most dwarves, Dwarves of deeplake clan are NOT afraid of water as they grew up on the lake shore...

OOC: I'd start with level or three of cleric as favored soul was recognized among the dwarves and taught tenets of Dumathoin, runes of power and teaching of dwarven clans, only later taking favored soul as multiclass if that is allowed. That would be primary class, except possibly if there is need, I'd take Warpriest PrC...

Brief History coming soon

I was just checking up on 4E info, and the common view right now is that the monk is going the way of the dodo. I'm fine starting with Asad(post 16) as-is, but I could also turn him into a swordsage from Book of 9 Swords, which is supposedly a 'preview' of 4E. I'm fine either way.
