Pre-made characters and progression

I have this question:

In the various D&D books one can find premade characters from the fantasy litterature, characters like Elminster, Dritz Du'Orden and Brunor Battlehammer. These characters are of a particular level in the books. Do you progress these levels according to the character levels in your party, or let them stay the way they are described in the books? If you progress the levels by what measure do you do it?

If I understand your question, then I would say that I advance my party according to the progression tables. Besides, I try to ignore those special 'literary' charactes as much as possible.
